Expressions of interest are also invited from ex-members, ex-staff, past exchangees and other interested persons to help restart Rural Youth in Queensland.
A Committee has been set up to help rebuild the organisation in a way that would appeal to rural youth in today’s world. There is no doubt that the new organisation would be very different in some ways yet still reflect the best of the old organisation. It is possible that the new membership will change the name, age limits and other features to make the new organisation fit their needs. The revitalization team will support changes of that kind if that is what the members decide.
Convener of the Rural Youth Revitalization Committee, Ken Gold suggests that it could be modelled on the successful Rural Youth and Young Farmers groups in New Zealand, Europe, the UK and Northern America which are all active and enjoying growing membership numbers. In Europe there are now over a million members from fifteen different organisations. Even newly formed nations such as Slovakia have active Rural Youth organisations.
Ken explained that there should be no need for a great deal of pre-planning or research into how this might work in Queensland. The structure and design of overseas Rural Youth organisations has proved itself over the past 10 years. In most countries the organisation is now built around an internet base rather than at a club level, with members able to join on line.
Inviting members to join the new RY is the best way to measure the level of interest amongst 15 to 35 year olds in Queensland and to discover how many potential members there might be in the state. Using the internet to invite new members will show us what kind of younger individuals are active on the Internet, looking for an organisation to join and what they would want from that organisation.
Past State Organiser John Nutting said that this top down approach was the key to the success of overseas groups. After joining the State organisation members can then contact other members via e-mail to develop common interest groups. These groups could then organise their own activities, advertise these on the RY website and then meet for local and regional or State level activities based on those common interests, rather than fixed districts or communities
Later on it could be possible to reform regional groups and even local clubs. However the strength of the organisation would be based on its state membership and its activities rather than the number of clubs .
